College and Career Headboard

have you completed FAFSA?

Applying for financial aid is an important step toward making college, career school, or vocational training affordable. Follow this guide to ensure you don’t miss out on funding opportunities.

 Key Dates

  • Application Window: October 1 – March 2 of your senior year

  • Tip: It's highly recommended to complete your application before winter break

Step 1: Complete the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application

  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
For U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens
    Visit FAFSA Website

  • California Dream Act
For undocumented students who meet AB 540 qualifications
    Visit CA Dream Act Website

To Qualify for Federal or State Aid:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen with a valid Social Security Number (or qualify under the Dream Act)

  • Have a high school diploma or GED

  • Be enrolled or accepted in an eligible degree or certificate program

After March 2:

  • Still planning to attend college, university, or trade school?
Submit your FAFSA or Dream Act ASAP!

  • Considering community college?
Apply for admissions now, and list your intended college in your FAFSA or Dream Act form.

Step 2: Create a WebGrants4Students Account

If you're using financial aid in California, create an account here:
webgrants4students.org

This portal helps you:

  • Track your Cal Grant status

  • See which college you’re claiming

  • Compare estimated financial aid packages

  • Review your reported housing and cost of attendance

Step 3: Review Your Financial Aid Award Letter

Log into your college portal and locate your Financial Aid Award Letter. It will show:

  • Total cost of attendance (tuition, books, housing, transportation, etc.)

  • Types of aid received (Cal Grants, Pell Grants, loans, work-study)

  • Your remaining balance or out-of-pocket costs

Step 4: Contact Your Future College (If Needed)

If your financial situation has changed (e.g., loss of income since your tax year info), contact your college’s financial aid office directly. They can help you file a special circumstance appeal for reevaluation.

Helpful Resources

Final Tips:

  • Evaluate award letters early to make your college decision sooner.

  • Meet with financial aid and academic counselors regularly to stay on track.

  • Most financial aid eligibility lasts for only four years—use your time and funding wisely.
